Install RMS Client
Previous  Top  Next

Note: These steps will only install the RMS Client application portion of the system. which also requires the RMS Server installation. It is recommended that you install the RMS Server first. You will still need to restore the RMS database file to a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or 2005 computer server before being able to open the RMS application. If you do not have a Microsoft SQL 2000 or 2005 computer server in your company, you may install the RMS Database Engine, which will install all needed components. The RMS application and Database Engine may reside on the same computer or separate computers.

1. Go to www.railcartracking.com/rms
and click on the RMS Client link.

NOTE: Before you go any further, be sure to close all open applications except your web browser that displays the RMS download page.

2. The File Download window will display, click Run. It will take a a minute or two for the file to completely download to a temporary folder on your computer. When the download is complete, the installation will begin.

4. You will prompted for a password to continue. If this is a trial, you must go to www.railcartracking.com/contact.htm
and fill out a form. After you submit the form, you will be provided the password. If you are an existing customer and do not know the password, please contact Customer Support 314-571-4028 or support@railcartracking.com. Enter the password and click OK, it may take a few moments for the files to extract.

5. The setup Prerequisites window may display. It will list any progams that must be installed before the RMS application is installed. Don't worry, all of this will be done automatically. On rare occasions, a program will be installed here that requires you to restart your computer. If this happens, please restart your computer; the installation will continue automatically after the computer is restarted. Click Next to continue.

6. Once all of the prerequisite programs have been installed, the Welcome window will display. Click Next.

7. Next, the License Agreement Acceptance window will appear. Please read it carefully - there are no "gotchas" in there, but it is good to review. If you are installing RMS for the first time as a trial, you are authorized to use RMS for the first 30 days for no charge unless otherwise notified by Railcar Tracking Co. Indicate your acceptance by clicking on the check box at the bottom of the window.

8. The READ ME window will display next. This window provides any special instructions related to the installation of RMS. Review the notes to be sure that you know any special instructions to follow for your particular installation. Click Next to continue.

9. Choose the Start Menu group. Normally you don't need to change the Start Menu group entry, just use the one that is there. Also, it is recommended that you select the option to create shortcuts for all users of this computer. This will enable anyone to use RMS on this computer if they have a user name and password to gain access to your computer and RMS, of course.

10. A window will now display that tells you that the installer has collected enough information to begin updating your computer. Click Next to continue.

11. If other applications that share files used by RMS were open during the installation, you may be prompted to restart you computer in order to apply the RMS installation. This may usually be avoided by closing all applications before the installation begins.

12. Run the RMS application from the Start | All Programs | Railcar Tracking Co | RMS menu.

13. Login to the application.

Single-User Installation
Click on the Edit Logon Settings button. If this is a single-user installation where the RMS Database Engine has been installed on this computer too, type in the password that was created during the RMS Server installation. Type the name that you would like the RMS database to be called in the Database text box (recommend: RMSDBSQL). The Server name text box will automatically show the name of this computer and the name of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express instance (defaults to SQLEXPRESS) that is installed on this computer. The Filename text box will automatically display a filename that is an RMS sample database backup (or the first .bak file found). Server drivers may be left to 2000. Click the Restore button to restore this backup into a new database. Once this is completed, you may then simply click on the OK button to Logon to the system.

Multi-User Installation
Click on the Edit Logon Setting button. Select the Type of Security that will be used. Enter the User Name, Password, Database, Server given to you by the database/network administrator. Use version 2000 Server drivers unless otherwise instructed by the database/network administrator.

Immediatly after the application opens, you may get this error message. This means that the application is referencing a folder that does not exist on your computer or your network. To enter a valid Flat File Directory, see the Flat File Directory help topic.
