Follow these steps to add or update criteria used to calculate proprietary demurrage/detention on various reports. Demurrage/detention measurement and charges will not display on a report unless criteria has been entered for the particular station where the railcar is unloaded/loaded. You may also make the criteria Party specific in the case where you may deliver railcars to more than one organization at the same station.
1. From the Home window, expand the Data Management branch; expand the Demurrage/Detention branch and double-click on the Proprietary branch.
2. Select the station that you want to enter detention criteria for by using the QuickFind: click on the drop-down button on the right side of this text box and select the station from the list.
If no detention criteria exists for this particular station, click the New command button.
3. Choose the Station for which this criteria will apply. Tab to the Acceptable Days field box and enter the number of days that are allowed at this location before charges take effect.
4. If you wish to make the criteria Customer / Party specific, choose this organization from the Responsible Party drop-down list.
5. Enter a daily charge.
6. Check / Fill in any free days that are given.
Note: RMS considers the selected free days and does not count them in the elapsed time calculation. Each railroad's demurrage calculations will vary and this functionality is only intended to highlight railcars that could potentially accrue demurrage charges. Elapsed time begins on 12am the day after the railcar was placed (either Constructively or Actually whichever comes first), which is similar to most railroad calculations. The most variation is found in what days are free according to different railroads. Please ask your rail carrier(s) for the tariffs that explain their demurrage charge policies. Many users of RMS who ship directly to their customers, find that it is helpful to use the Detention reports to encourage their customers to unload the railcars within a certain time limit or be subject to daily charges.
