FAQ's For Technical Types

How much time am I really going to have to spend supporting this software?
Most of our customers require little no IT support. If RMS is installed as a standalone application on a single computer, IT assistance is required to give the user local administrator rights. If RMS is used on a network with multiple users and with the RMS database on a server in the data center, budgeting an hour per month should be adequate.

What are the system requirements?

Is the software installed on our computers?

Yes. There is no additional software required – RMS will install everything it needs, which is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (provided free by Microsoft) and a few dll files. SQL Server is not installed on the client computer in a multi-user environment. You may use your company SQL Server 2000 or 2005 machine if available.

Why do you not offer RMS as a Web-based, hosted service?

To save your company money. Your transportation department and RMS depends on importing a high volume of data – this data, if routed through a hosted service, costs a lot (up to $10,000 or more annually for a company that ships 500 railcar loads per month). As mentioned before, RMS requires little IT assistance. The user or we can perform most maintenance. All of our software is installed using 100% Windows Installer 3.1, which provides easy and stable installation experiences.

Will RMS work with our firewall?

Yes. The data imported from the Internet is done via Https or FTP. Email is exported using SMTP. RMS supports proxy server and even email server authentication.

Does the user need administrator rights to install RMS?

Yes – for installation of the client software. Once RMS is installed, it can be used by those with limited security rights. Single users who install the client and server on a single computer will need to have local admin rights always.
