 |
| Can RMS save me time and money even if I don't own or lease railcars? |

Click here to read how Great Lakes Carbon Corporation's Transportation Manager eliminated more than one work week per month of her time related to managing their rail transportation. |
 |
| How is RMS going to help me reduce the money I am spending on railcar purchases or leases? |
| If you have a railcar fleet that you own or lease, you may get 10% better utilization of those assets by using RMS' Railcar Utilization reports. These reports identify a metric called Shipments Per Railcar and enable you to measure exactly how well your railcars are being utilized. Measurement is the first step to improvement. You can't manage something that you can't measure. Once you have used RMS to identify Shipment Per Railcar, then you can use RMS' Trip Cycle analysis reports to pinpoint the bottlenecks that are slowing your shipments and costing you money. | How does RMS track free running / system railcar shipments? |
RMS can automatically and seamlessly import electronic copies of waybills for your inbound and outbound shipments. It then checks to see if the railcar exists in your RMS fleet, if not, it will add the railcar to the fleet as a temporary fleet railcar; it will track the shipment until it is unloaded and then it will deactivate the railcar so that it no longer shows up on daily exception reports. The history is preserved so that it is available for research, transit time / unloading time analysis reports.

| Can my customers / trading partners / employees in remote locations access the information in RMS? |

| So RMS and its database run on our computers? Aren't Web-based applications the wave of the future? |
| Web-based applications are appropriate for certain types of applications: those where reaching a high number of people (thousands) is the most critical feature. Windows-based applications are more appropriate where richness of features is critical to ensure the maximum productivity of its users. You also need to consider what makes and/or saves you the most money. Users are generally more productive using a Windows-based system because its user interface is more robust with quick response time. The rich user interface of a Windows-based application is more appropriate for everyday, line of business applications. Getting an update out quickly to thousands of users is typically not important since the application is typically used by 5 to 20 users. It is more expensive to use a Web-based rail shipment tracking and fleet management system because it is very costly to build these systems, the slow response time drags user productivity, it is harder to integrate with your existing business systems, and access to free sources of data is reduced. Even though the RMS software and database operate on your computers, it requires very little to no IT administration. Our technicians or you can do most of what little administration is needed. Because RMS resides on your computers and is not routed through a third party, Web-based service, there is usually no charge for the CLM and waybill data. This can be a huge savings. For example, if you ship 500 shipments per month, you could save up to $10,000. |
 |
| Do we have to enter our bills of lading through Steelroads? |
| No. It doesn’t matter how you get your bill of ladings to the railroads, RMS gets an electronic copy of the waybill, which is generated by the railroad immediately after they receive the bill of lading. This is a huge advantage to using RMS: it doesn't require a huge change in your company operation. |
